Los Cabos

Los Cabos literally means the end or the tip. Los Cabos is located south of San Diego in the part of Mexico between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez known as Baja California Sur. The most popular tourist destinations in Los Cabos are Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, both of which are located along opposite ends of what is known as the corridor. This stretch of highway between the cities runs along the Sea of Cortez, and is only about 18 miles long, and offers tourists a great selection of five star resorts, world class golf, fine dining, and water sports. A great site to check out is www.visitcabo.com. It has a ton of information for you to check out including how to get to Los Cabos, where to stay, and what there is to do while you are there.

Depending on what time of year you plan to visit Los Cabos, there is always something going on. Deep sea fishing is very popular, as Cabo San Lucas is known as the Marlin Capital of the World. Many visitors enjoy sport fishing year round. Some varieties are more prevalent during certain months, the like swordfish and marlin, which are in season during late October through December. These types of trophy fish are catch and release only, and can sometimes be as large as 1000 pounds! Other prevalent species are mahi mahi and yellow fin tuna and may be kept if so desired. Fishing trips can be booked for a half day, full day, or for multiple days, and even offer meals and luxurious overnight accommodations if this is what you want. According to the Los Cabos website, there are over 500 fishing boats from the more modest to most luxurious awaiting you.

During the months of January through April, thousands of gray whales make their way down the Pacific coast to birth their calves, and many continue their travels around the tip of Los Cabos into the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez! It is not uncommon to be hanging out in the pool at your resort and spot a whale breaching in the near distance. What a sight to see!. I’ve experienced this myself, and it is truly spectacular! If you want a closer view, you can charter a whale watching trip that includes drinks, snacks, and dinner with transportation to and from your hotel. This is a great opportunity to experience nature and a truly awesome picture taking opportunity.

If fishing is your sport, then Los Cabos is your vacation destination. Many visitors return annually just for this reason; because there is no greater fishing in the world. Whatever your price range, there is a fishing boat waiting to accommodate you, and they guarantee you will catch fish. If you are after a certain kind, such as marlin or swordfish, book ahead, because this is after all, the Marlin Capital of the World!

In addition to being the Marlin Capital of the World, Los Cabos has some of the finest hotels and resorts, exquisite dining, and world class golf courses. Los Cabos in located at the tip of Mexico’s Baja California Sur, and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Sea of Cortez on the east. Some of the finest luxury hotels and resorts are located along the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, some of which are, the Fiesta Americana Grand, the Westin Regina Golf and Beach Resort, Hilton Los Cabos Golf and Beach Resort, Melia Cabo Real, and Sheraton Hacienda del Mar. There are also great accommodations located in Cabo San Lucas, which are close to the wild nightlife entertainment, shopping, and fishing, or San Jose del Cabo, for a quieter, less authentic Mexican village experience.

The deluxe hotels and resorts offer fine amenities and most offer ocean-view or ocean-front rooms exclusively. Most offer condos and timeshares as well, which you can tour during your stay. Room accommodations include deluxe suites, junior suites, executive suites, private balconies, some with Jacuzzis, wet bar, in room safe, satellite TV, wireless internet, twice daily maid service, and all beautifully decorated with marble floors and baths. These resorts offer a fine selection of dining as well, with several choices from which to choose, room service, a la carte, buffet style, gourmet, and outside beach front or pool side service. The seafood of course is delectable, and is presented in various different mouth watering menu selections. Some resorts also offer an all inclusive option, so that all meals, snacks, drinks, and tips are included in the price.

World class golf is probably the second most popular attraction of Los Cabos (sport fishing being the first), with six championship golf courses in the area, Los Cabos has been the home of the PGA Senior Slam Tournament since 1995. There are three Jack Nicklaus designed championship courses located at the Cabo Real, the Cabo del Sol, and the One and Only Palmilla resorts. Other courses include the Robert Trent Jones II designed course at Cabo Real, the Tom Weiskopf designed course also at Cabo del Sol, and Raven Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas. These courses are challenging to those golfers with a low handicap, and will make for quite a day for those just beginning. Located next to the Sea of Cortez and surrounded by beautiful views all around, these championship golf courses entice players from all over the world.

Even if you don’t fish or golf, there is plenty to see and do in Los Cabos. The area is full of Mexican culture and history, which many locals are glad to share with you. Shopping is abundant throughout Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and many of the resorts have upscale boutiques as well. The weather is lovely most, if not all the time, with average temperatures from 72 to 86 degrees throughout the year. Plan to visit Los Cabos more than once, and stay at a different resort each time! Enjoy being surrounded by the natural beauty and serenity of the Baja California peninsula, you won’t regret it!
